Bikini season is coming to an end and with it the extra motivation to stay cute and skinny in order to wear all your skin bearing summer outfits.  When the colder months begin to roll in, the pounds seem to follow closely after and before you know it, you’re hiding your winter muffin-top with hooded sweatshirts and roomy jeans.  You swap your dessert of watermelon and cantaloupe with warm, baked goodies and replace your salad dinner with roasts, potatoes, gravy, and heavy pastas.

Winter is the season for comfort food and comfort food is a huge culprit in seasonal weight gain.  Who wants a normal coffee when you can have a pumpkin spice latte?  So, how do you stay skinny in the winter when you’re surrounded by delicious caloric nightmares?

By paying attention.

Going into any kind of challenge is ten times easier when you’re aware of potential outcomes.  If you know you are susceptible to seasonal weight gain and have been putting on 10lbs every December, simply paying attention to your meal choices is going to help you fight the winter fat.  You are a smart, capable person.  You have complete control over what you put into your mouth and if drinking pumpkin spice lattes three times a week last year made you gain weight, why would you make the same mistake this year?  Yes, it’s difficult to conquer temptation and there’s no need to deprive yourself completely, ever, but you have to pick your battles wisely.

Be conscious of the calories your winter dinners are costing you; don’t just assume you can switch from healthy, light summer dishes to honey baked ham and mashed potatoes without realizing the difference in calories.  It’s normal to crave heavier, heartier foods when it’s cold outside, and it’s up to you to modify those meals to satisfy your craving AND control your weight.  Look up healthier versions of your winter favorites at home-replacing any fatty side dish like macaroni and cheese or garlic bread with vegetables is a great place to start.  Consider replacing cream based soups with water based, vegetable dense soups.

Gaining weight this winter is entirely up to you.  Our bodies don’t need an extra layer of fat to keep us warm in cold weather; we have coats for that.  Be smart about your comfort food choices and eat them in moderation.   Cute and Skinny explains how to stay skinny for the rest of your life, not just for the summer.  Your goal should be the same.

How are you going to stay in shape and fight the winter fat?
