Contrary to the popular excuse ‘I don’t have time’, if you’re trying to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight, physical exercise is something you simply have to find time for, even if you consider yourself the busiest person on the planet. Think about all the time you spend on non-work related activities during the day. Whether it’s shopping, surfing the internet, watching television, or doing your hair, everyone has at least one activity they can cut back on or replace completely with exercise. Assuming you’re awake sixteen hours per day, 20-60 minutes is hardly a substantial amount of time in comparison, especially when you think of all the benefits you would reap by devoting that time to improving your physical well-being with exercise.

If finding time to exercise is something you struggle with, then it could be because you’re thinking about exercise in the wrong way. Many people often mistake exercise for intense cardio workouts that leave their face flushed and body dripping with sweat, therefore, when they plan to exercise, they almost always have to shower afterwards. This doesn’t always have to be the case. Exercising doesn’t have to mean breaking a sweat. Exercising could simply be going for a thirty minute walk around your neighborhood during the day or after dinner. Exercising could be a quick Pilates or Yoga work out that you fit in during a lunch break. If you’re not used to exercising or haven’t exercised in a while, adding any kind of physical activity, however low the intensity is, still counts and will help build up your strength and endurance.

Studies show that people who exercise at the same time everyday have a much easier time keeping up with their workout routine because eventually, it becomes a habit. Therefore, it’s highly recommended that you figure out which part of your day would be the easiest to exercise in and stick with it. Like every habit, each time you follow through with it will make the next time easier, until skipping it will feel awkward and uncomfortable. Some people prefer to exercise in the morning to get it out of the way for the day. This seems like one of the best times of day because you are able to get exercise and showering done before you start any kind of work, setting a productive tone for the day. If you don’t like waking up early, exercising after work is also a great option. If it’s hard for you to leave your house again once you get home from work, keep a gym bag in your car so you can go straight to the gym or wherever else you exercise from work. The time you choose to exercise is completely dependent on you and your schedule, so whatever time of day you choose, make sure it’s one that you can stick with.

Remember that exercise does not have to take up too much time in your day and in the long run, it’s much more beneficial to you than any sedentary activities you might be occupied with. Whether it’s walking, working in the yard, going on a hike, or doing Pilates, exercise is an important part of losing weight and keeping it off and should be incorporated into your daily routine. Don’t push yourself into intense workouts if you’re not in the habit of working out already. Find something enjoyable to do that you can stick with and get moving!
