It’s 7:00am. What does that mean? It’s workout time. Sigh….

I drag my feet to the TV, put in the Jillian Michaels workout video I’m currently trying to master and reluctantly turn it on.  Oops! I almost forgot the most important part of my routine, my Ipod!

I quickly put on one of my workout mixes, and as soon as I hear Lady Gaga come through my speakers, I feel a rush of energy surge through me.  “Not going stop, I don’t want to talk to anyone, stop telephoning me…ahh ahh “ I am so busy singing along to my favorite tunes, not even Jillian Michaels can break my spirit… 2 minutes of push-ups, not a problem.. Followed by 60 seconds of a tortuous wall squat, still can’t break my swagger! Lil Wayne is on and I am way too busy singing Lollipop to realize that my legs feel like jello. Before I know it, my hour workout is over and I am still running in place because Kanye’s Stronger hasn’t finished yet.

Does any of this sound familiar to you?  It should.   There have been many medical studies showing the positive effects listening to music while exercising has on people.  According to studies headed by Dr. Jimmy Smith, a sports psychologist who practices in Texas, the right music can make you exercise harder and burn calories faster. Because exercisers are focusing on the music instead of on their bodies, he believes, they don’t feel the strain as much, so they work harder and longer. One of the most interesting findings of his research is that the best music isn’t high-energy, fast-paced dance music, as many workout trainers have assumed.  The best music actually depends on the exerciser’s preference.   If you like country crooners, put them on instead of trying to get into jock jams.  Everyone has their own personal taste and that is even reflected on what music increases their energy level during workouts.

So next time you feel the dread of your approaching workout, just think that you can finally listen to The Blue Print 3 in its entirety without any interruptions…except for maybe a few pushups ;)

I wonder what they had on the radio...
