I wanted to start writing more reviews on my blog to make it more personal and to give you an idea of what exercises I do to stay in shape. I haven’t had a gym membership for the past five months, so I’ve been relying on lots of workout videos for my daily exercise. I wanted to start by reviewing one of my favorites from the Biggest Loser’s Jillian Michaels. She is by far my favorite video trainer and I will have more posts about her other videos soon.
The workout begins with a thorough circuit-style warm-up which lasts about three minutes and is then repeated. Each part of the workout is completed in the same circuit style, so don’t get too excited when one circuit is finished; you will have to do it all over again. There are two girls working out behind Jillian; one modifying moves for beginners and one for more advanced viewers. Providing the option of move modifications with visual examples helps out a lot for those just starting out and takes the stress out of keeping up with something that’s beyond your ability.
After the warm-up, the video moves on to a kickboxing circuit. This is one of the easier parts of the video, so enjoy it while you can. The second circuit features challenging resistance and jump training moves which may take a while to complete perfectly as a beginner. The video then moves on to a high energy cardio circuit and is followed by a circuit completely done on the mat. The exercises done on the floor range from cardio, strength, and abdominal moves and vary in intensity. This circuit signifies the middle of the workout.
The second half of the video begins with another set of kickboxing moves followed by a circuit of more jump training, which I find to be the most difficult. The last circuit is less intense and features a variety of different moves which prepare you for the cool down. Unlike the warm-up, the cool down stretches are only completed once.
Throughout the video, Jillian provides relevant commentary explaining the benefits and logic behind certain moves and offers words of encouragement. She is both motivating and informative, without being antagonizing or militaristic like other trainers. The video was designed intelligently by alternating between varying levels of intensity in both moves and circuits so it does not leave you completely burned out at any one time.
Seven circuits in all, ‘Banish Fat Boost Metabolism’ is a serious workout that delivers results and leaves you feeling amazing. Each time I complete this workout, I’m left with a pleasurable endorphin rush and a real sense of accomplishment. It is better than any workout I get without a trainer at the gym and is so effective in building endurance and strength.
I struggled with a lot of moves in this workout when I first started and am blown away at how much stronger I became after only a few weeks of repeating it. The most visible result I achieved from this video is probably a tighter stomach (with a few visible muscle lines;) and a complete loss of love handles – I’d definitely say that’s worth an hour out of my morning!
